The Longleat Cyberman Head

After the surprising success with the bodysuit, what were my chances of also matching the Longleat Cyberman mask to a face in the crowd of forty years ago?
Of the eleven Cyberman heads made for The Moonbase, two were "talkers" with an internal mechanism to open the mouth slot and nine were standard closed-mouth versions.

The Longleat Cyberman head is one of the standard versions. It is marked inside with the number "10", of the original eleven. The "ear handles" and backplate are absent, as is the internal light which would have been behind the hole at the top.

For The Tomb of the Cybermen, two of the eleven Moonbase masks - one "talker" and one standard - were modified to become the hero and stunt Cybercontroller masks. This left only one "talker" mask and eight standard Cyberman masks.

Understandably, as they were all cast from the same mould the masks are effectively identical. I could find no way to determine which of the eleven masks seen in The Moonbase is the Longleat head.

However, after the actors in The Moonbase had complained that the masks were inadequately ventilated, the heads received a small but significant modification for use on The Tomb of the Cybermen; airholes were drilled under the brow ridge and on both sides of the face.

These airholes were placed in similar circular patterns on each mask. Similar, but not identical; because the new holes were positioned by hand rather than by use of a rigid template, the exact spacing between them was unique to every mask.

This meant it would potentially be possible to match my Cyberman mask to an appearance in The Tomb of the Cybermen - provided that a good view of the airholes could be found at some point during the programme. If the mask had stayed in the background, there would be no chance at all of establishing a link.

It was a process of elimination. Examining all the close-up shots of Cybermen eventually led me to focus on the scene in episode three where the Controller orders Cybermats to be activated. This scene prominently features one particular Cyberman as it operates the control panel.

There are good steady shots of this mask from the front and both sides. The initial check did not reveal any obvious difference that would immediately discount it, as was the case on some other masks. Fortunately the airhole patterns are clear enough to enable detailed comparisons to be made.

Overlaying a screencap image of this Cyberman on to a photo of the Longleat mask and mixing from 100% Longleat through to 100% Tomb made it very clear that the airholes corresponded exactly.

Applying the same method to the other side of the mask produced the same positive result.

The Longleat Cyberman's costume and head were both finally identified. It was hard to believe my luck at having found them both. And not only were they identified, I could actually watch their TV appearances as the episodes still exist - very unusual for stories from that time. They even had a scene together:

Although located within Doctor Who, the costume's fate over the next sixteen years remained unknown.
